Jalan Tunku

This road is named after the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj. His private residence was at No.1, Jalan Tunku.

Tunku Abdul Rahman was born in Alor Setar, a member of the royal family, he was the seventh son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, Sultan of Kedah. He studied and graduated in Bachelor of Arts in Law and History from Cambridge University in 1925. As a person who is active inn social and intellectual activites, he formed the Society of Malay Students of Great Britain while studying.

Upon returning to Malaya, he served in the Kedah’s Civil Service, got involved in politics and subsequently became the President of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1951.

Tunku Abdul Rahman was also the leading figure in negotiating with the British to advocate for the nation’s independence. Hence, he is known as the ‘Father of Independence’.

There are also several other streets around the area whose names are suffixed with ‘Tunku’.
