Living in a country with different races always give us an exciting adventure when it comes to exploring different cultures and foods. With the Indian community being a significant part of the Malaysia, there are many types of Indian foods or cuisines that are influenced by Indian recipes in Kuala Lumpur.
In Malaysia, most of the Indians’ ancestors migrated from South India, and that is why we can easily find banana leaf rice served in the city.
Although the meal is named as banana leaf rice, it is not cooked with banana leaves though. It is basically served with banana leaves instead of plates with white rice and assortment of dishes. Traditionally, it is only served with vegetables as it is meant to be a vegetarian dish. But as we evolve and based on demands, restaurants are serving it with a variety of dishes as well.
Banana Leaf Rice Etiqutte
It might look like a simple dish to some, but eating banana leaf rice comes with traditional etiquette. Although in the modern city especially in restaurants, following the etiquette is not compulsory, it is encouraged to learn more about cultures.
Banana leaf meals are usually eaten by using hands. Traditionally only the right hand is used, and only the tips of the fingers should touch the food. Any part of the finger beyond the first knuckle or the palm must not touch the food. Parts of the banana leaf meal etiquette also dictates that, after the meal, the guest must always fold the banana leaf inwards as a sign of gratitude to the host. However, when meals are served at funeral wakes, the leaf is folded outwards as a sign of condolence to the family of the deceased. Due to this, folding the leaf outwards is considered rude in any other circumstance.
