Hang Lekir is one of the comrades of the legendary Malay warrior Hang Tuah who were martially trained by Adi Putra.
Before this road was renamed as Jalan Hang Lekir, it was known as Cecil Street, named in honour of Sir Cecil Clementi Smith, who was the Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1887 to 1893. He was an accomplished scholar of Chinese culture and able to converse in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
