7 Beautiful Religious Places to Visit in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is a nation with rich cultural heritage due to its diversity despite being known as a Muslim-majority country. With different ethnics settling down in Malaysia, you can easily find places of worship that belongs to different religions in close neighbourhoods.

Even more impressive is that amidst the modern development of skyscrapers and buildings in Kuala Lumpur, the old and heritage religious buildings still stand strong within the city.

The strong presence of the community have supported the sustainability of these religious places. The beautiful architecture and design elements of the buildings have also attracted tourists and locals, and have become a must-visit spot for travellers.

We can easily curate some of the best and popular religious buildings around Kuala Lumpur and this is the list.

The Federal Territory Mosque

The Federal Territory Mosque is considered pretty new compared to the other religious buildings with a long history. But the beauty of the architecture which features a blend of the 16th century Ottoman Empire with traditional Malay craftsmanship makes it worthy to visit.

The mosque which was completed at the end of 2000, is also influenced by the Blue Mosque of Istanbul, Turkey. Merging communal elements to the mosque, it offers an interactive relationship between spiritual elements and the community around it.

The mosque’s 22 domes are glazed with decorative blue tiles, made from a composite material of glass fibre fabric mixed with epoxy resin to make it durable and light. The mosque is exquisitely decorated with detailed carvings of traditional meandering cloud motives inspired by local floral patterns.

The mosque is open to anyone, but visitors are required to cover up (including wearing a headscarf) upon entering the mosque as a sign of respect.

Thean Hou Temple

Completed in 1987, the temple is built by the Hainan Chinese living in Malaysia.

This syncretic temple with elements of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism is a grandiose structure and represents a combination of modern architectural techniques and authentic traditional design featuring imposing pillars, spectacular roofs, ornate carvings and intricate embellishments.

On specific occasions such as the Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Wesak Day; the crowds will throng to the temple for prayers.

Batu Caves Temple

Batu Caves was promoted as a place of worship by K. Thamboosamy Pillai, an Indian Tamil trader. He was inspired by the vel-shaped entrance of the main cave and was inspired to dedicate a temple to Lord Murugan within the caves.

The temple is a popular spot especially during the Thaipusam festival where the Indian community will visit the Batu Caves for their annual prayers. And it has become a pilgrimage site for many Hindus even from around the world.

Jamek Mosque

The Jamek Mosque was the first large mosque to be built in Kuala Lumpur with the foundation stone being laid by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sir Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah on March 1908.

The design of the mosque has been described as a Moorish, Indo-Saracenic or Mughal architecture. It has 2 main minarets among other smaller ones; the pattern of pink and white banding of the minarets, formed of brick and plaster, has been described as “blood and bandage”. The mosque has 3 domes, the largest of which reached 21.3 metres (70 ft) in height. The prayer hall is located beneath the domes. The mosque was refurbished in 1984 and the minaret nearest the river was underpinned as it was already sloping.

Masjid Jamek has served as Kuala Lumpur’s main mosque until the development of National Mosque (Masjid Negara) in 1965.
