Duan Wu Festival, which is also known as the Dragon Boat Festival is an old tradition observed by the Chinese. The festival is a day to commemorate an influential ancient poet, Qu Yuan who died on this day during the Warring States Period of the Zhou dynasty.
Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River, and the locals organised a mass effort on their boats to rescue the poet. This is said to have inspired the Dragon Boat Races, which is why this observation is also known as the Dragon Boat Festival.
When the body of the greatly admired poet could not be found, the people dropped balls of sticky rice into the river so that the aquatics can feed on it instead of the body. Thus, Chinese always make their own rice dumplings on this day, although it is no longer thrown into the river.
Since then, rice dumplings have evolved into many different versions to adapt to the local taste and culture. In Malaysia, there’s even Nyonya, vegan and even a halal type of rice dumplings.

Pinang is a Malay word that means betel nut, which comes from a species of palm. The nut contains tannin, which is responsible for the reddish colour of the saliva when chewing the betel quid.
Originally, the road was named after Penang Island, and not the plant.
This road provides access from the city centre to the Malaysian Houses of Parliament. Club Road, which used to stop at Seven Dials, was absorbed as Jalan Parlimen and the road extended to the Parliament building.
The idea for a Parliament building was mooted by the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. The site was selected in 1959, on the hill known as the West Folly Hill. The hilltop was leveled to about 61 meters above sea level, and on 31 August 1962 Tuanku Syed Putra Al-Haj, the third Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia laid the foundation stone of the development. The first Parliament session held in this building was on 16 September 1963.
Jalan Kuching continues from the Jalan Kinabalu flyover and lead north towards Sentul and Segambut. Both roads were named after capital cities of the East Malaysia’s states, namely Sarawak and Sabah.
Jalan Cheras led the way to the village of Cheras. The village is said to have received its name from a derivation of the word teras or tras – which is known to mean the hard core of a tree trunk. The Chinese referred to the village as “Chiu Lai”, after the large banana plantation over there.
The overcrowding population along Loke Yew Road and Birch Road in the early 1900s forced a large number of settlers to build their homes to the north of Cheras Road. Today part of the road falls within the jurisdiction of Kuala Lumpur while the other part falls under Selangor.
