Wong Loke Yew is a famous businessman and philanthropist in the early 1900s and also played a role in the development of Kuala Lumpur.
Together with Chan Sow Lin, both of them built one of the biggest tin mine venture in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. He also opened up rubber and coffee estates, and made investments throughout Malaya and Singapore.
Besides his own companies, he was also shareholders of Pahang Motor Car Service, Raub Straits Trading Co., Straits Steamship Co., Federal Engineers and Kwong Yik Bank. His ventures into different businesses has made him one of the wealthiest man in Malaya during that era.

Loke Yew was also a strong advocate of education as one of the founders of Victoria Institution. He also joined the Selangor State Council in 1892 and a supported various development programmes in Selangor.
