While we are witnessing an era of development in Kuala Lumpur, we are also seeing many of the abandoned and old heritage buildings in the city being revived and repurposed into exciting spaces. These can be seen with places like Sentul Depot, REXKL, Rumah Tangsi, Zhongshan Building and many others.
Although each of these buildings are used for different purposes, they have one similar theme, which is about arts, culture and the local community.
In the centre of Kuala Lumpur, tucked away and nestled within Lorong Ampang, there is another ‘gudang’ which has been rejuvenated into an urban arts centre. The building with a history of over 100 years was a former old Dutch warehouse and previously hosted the Boom Boom Room, the city’s top cabaret club in the 80s and 90s.

The owner of the site worked with Ling Hao Architects to bring the Godown alive again by renovating the Brick Annexe which is the old building and added an extension which is the Concrete Annexe. According to the architect, the owner’s memory played a role in the design of the spaces, which thus became inclusive with the street and the life that takes place there: not only to humans but also to animal and vegetation.
