Jalan Raja Alang is named after Raja Alang bin Raja Berayun from the Mandailing ethnicity of Sumatra. The son of Raja Alang, Datuk Raja Mohamed was given the honour of renaming the road due to his efforts in the struggle for Malaya’s independence. Instead of naming the road after himself, he chose to honour his father.
Before 1968, this road was known as Perkins Road, named after C.J. Perkins, the Deputy Surveyor-General of the Federated Malay States and Straits Settlements.
