Every single place in every city comes with its own specific history. The way buildings are built and how roads are named has its own specific meaning, especially a city like Kuala Lumpur which was already bustling since the tin mining era around the 1840s.
Learning the road names itself can teach us a lot about the history in Kuala Lumpur. The names of the majority of older roads in and around Kuala Lumpur were originally formed during British rule and as such, were in English and named after British figures of various fields, a handful of local dignitaries or royalties, districts, local populations, landmarks or geographical features.
After Malaya’s independence, some streets were renamed and new streets were introduced commemorating local Malaysian figures, Malaysia’s culture and key politicians in the country.
